  • how to nicely series wire your filaments

I'm trying to cut the hum on this little dutch 50c5 powered combo amp. The heaters of the 35w4, 50c5, and 12ax7 heater are wired in series right off the AC power with a resistor to drop the residual voltage.

The heater wires aren't twisted and just sort of wired willy nilly. I'm a little unclear on how to twist these wires. Does one wire just twist with all the others across the whole circuit?

Is this a waste of time as this circuit is just inherently noisy by design (or lack thereof)?

I already put in a 1:1 transformer/3 prong cord and replaced the electrolytic caps.

Noisy by design. Too much trouble to come up with a twisted lead design AFAICT. Just thinking out loud, but you may be able to phase cancel some hum by soldering a length of lead to one of the filament lugs and capping it with shrink tube. Then move it near the preamp circuits and try to if find a spot where the hum is reduced. If you find a sweet spot, fix the lead there somehow. It may not work but there's nothing to lose by trying.

I'd try screening that long wire from the 12AX7 grid (pin 2) to the pot wiper.
