  • Ideas for a project

I have a PT that used to sit in a quad EL84 power stage (I measured 360VDC after the rectifier). I'd like to build something based on this PT. I don't really know what a sufficient anode voltage would be for different types of tubes sitting in a guitar amplifier.

Any suggestions on what tubes I should use in the power stage (is there some other tubes than the EL84 suitable here)?

6V6? 6L6-G (cokebottle oldie type)? 7591? Ampeg ran those ~370 in some small combos... 6CZ5 (cheap - burn em up!) 7868? 7687? 6973? 6AR6? 6K6? I have no idea how many of those sound...

You're probably limited more by heater current than plate voltage. You've got 3A + preamp tubes. Depending on how many preamp tubes, scratch a few & get a bit more heater amps. You could run a pair of EL34s if you wanted to, I reckon. 6AR6 I mentioned cuz they're cheap, 6CZ5 too. The first would be grossly under spec, the second over spec, but we all know about the Fender Champs & Deluxe Reverbs.

      Thanks a lot dude!

I'll check these tubes out, in detail. About the heater current, there were 4 pre amp tubes in the old amplifier, in addition to the power tubes. I should be fine I think, as I don't plan to do a beefy pre amp section.

Scratch the 7687, they seem to be a triode/pentode preamp tube... I thought they were power pentode w. a triode section. Sorry bout that!

Hm... I'll let this one pass.

A pair of 5881 would be tasty at 360v season to taste with the preamp of your choice.
They would last a long time and sound great if biased properly.
If you decide to sell the PT,
I have been looking for one like that.
            Cheers

Dude, isn't that the Ivan version of a 6L6 tube? If so, they are probably not so pricey. I don't want to sell it. I have no amp in the 30-40 W region and would like to build one. I actually think I'll start design a power stage with these tubes. (Hopefully I can find some nifty stage on the web)

Oh, while I'm at it. If I go with tube rectifier, when I chose tube model, is it the max voltage from the transformer that I need to match against a tube.
