  • B15n Transformer choices

I'm thinking about building a smallish bass amp based on an Ampeg B15n, with a single channel and trying to keep costs reasonable. I'm looking around at sources for transformers at the moment. As I'm not going to copy the fliptop form factor, I'm looking at standard transformers rather than reproduction potted units. I'm in the UK, so some of the US suppliers are a little expensive when shipping is added, but I can get Hammond transformers easily enough. This site has some reasonably priced transformers too: Valves Stuff
The OT is easy enough, as I can find several options for a ~6k primary with adequate power handling and 4/8/16 ohm secondaries.
I'm less certain about choosing a PT. The original PT108 transformer had a 750V CT secondary rated at 150mA (according to schematics I've seen). This seems like a low current rating for a pair of 6L6s and I'm wondering if I should stick with that (on the basis that it worked in the originals) or go for something sturdier. Using a 150mA rated transformer would open up a lot of choices as many of the transformers intended for Plexi or JTM45 style amps are 690V CT at 150mA - if I used an SS rectifier this would put the B+ voltage not too far from the original B15n. But I know there is an argument for using generous iron for bass amps.
I know there have been a few B15n builds on here, so I'd be interested to know what people went for.

I've been looking around a little more, including checking out what Kevin O'Connor used in the B15n derived build in TUT volume 3. He used a Hammond 270FX, which is 550V CT at 173mA. The 50Hz 230V equivalent would be the 370FX, and that would be one potential option. I presume he still got acceptable results with the lower voltage compared to the 750V CT in the original design.
I've seen another which looks good though, and I may order one of these transformers when they come back in stock; TT-MA36 Marshall® Style 36 Watt Netztransformator - DERZEIT AUSVERKAUFT - Tube-Town GmbH
It's intended for a 4xEL84 36 watt design, but since it offers 600V CT at 200mA and costs less than a suitable Hammond it seems like a good fit for my needs.
