trimming pot shaets

is it possible to trim the shaft, i need to cut about 3/16 inch off so the knobs set closer to the face of the amp. i was thinking of a dremel type tool with a carbide cutting wheel.

I've done it many times.
I put the end of the shaft in a bench vice (you can use a small table top clamp on model) then hold the body of the pot while I saw through the shaft with a hacksaw. Then just clean up the remaining shaft with a file.

Or my favorite method - a small cutoff wheel in my Dremel.
