  • Where to get amp part?

I'm in Toronto, Canada which has limited, inexpensive options for amp parts. What to ask where might be the place to order parts like caps, tubes, wire, fuses, etc...

So far here are my choices:

    https://www.tubesandmore.com/

    https://www.amplifiedparts.com/

    https://www.tubedepot.com/

Is there anywhere else? Which of the above do you like and why. Thanks so much.

    J.

I sometimes suspect that there are vendors operating under more than one name. That aside though...

I'm fond of Antique Electronics Supply. They've been competitive with price, never kludged my order, carry some things I like that others don't and shipping is reasonable and prompt.

Thanks. I did notice on their site that they don't carry slo-blow 0.500 amp fuses (long ones). The lowest value they sell in slowblow is 1Amp.

I agree about Antique Electronic Supply, but the shipping to Canada tends to be outrageous.

Nextgen Guitars (Ottawa area) has a fair amount of amp stuff, not so much in the way of electronics, but all the big heavy stuff like transformers, tolex, speakers, etc. Very reasonable prices and free shipping. Canada's #1 Parts Source For DIY Musicians - Next Gen Guitars

In Toronto there is A-1 Parts in Etobicoke index There is a lot of stuff on the website. If you go there bring a headlamp or something. There is a dimly lit warehouse full of surplus electronics that has some real gems in it.

For most electronic components I use Mouser or Digi-key. Both have Canadian websites and very reasonable shipping.

        Hope that helps

when I need music-specific parts vs. generic electronics parts I have to change suppliers.

AES / CE-Dist is a great source for music-specific parts but their prices on generic electronics parts can be high.

For generic electronics components the large US distributors are Newark, Allied, Mouser and Digikey.

I'm not sure how any of this might change if you're across an international border. Since you're in Canada, it might help to get input from some of the Canadian guys about suppliers. g1, you reading?

Oh yeah. Mouser. For regular components that is where I buy. For guitar amp specific stuff like can caps, transformers and tubes you do need to shop elsewhere. If you're looking for a one stop shop, forget it. I've never managed it in a quarter century.

I recently had a problem like the OP's, where stock fuses for a modern amplifier (OTT), were hard to find. There has been a trend in modern amps toward protecting the B+ lines with low current fuses, as well as a trend toward replacing the old large Buss fuses with compact mini fuses. The suppliers of "classic" amp parts typically don't carry those, so you have to go to an electronics house instead. I went to Digikey.

In Canada, Digikey has the better shipping options for generic parts. $8 flat rate next day. Mouser has a $8 shipping option to Canada but it is not Fedex next day and usually takes a week or 2, however Mouser parts are a tad cheaper and have a bit more selection.

cluster, justradios is in Scarborough and they have great pricing on caps and resistors, especially high voltage caps for tube amps.

I find it a little overwhelming using Mouser or Digikey especially when looking for Axial caps so i stick to Ce Dist /Antique Electronics Supply ,

I like the Mouser and Digikey searches. You can narrow down by all sorts of specs depending on the application. If it has to fit a certain area, you can eliminate cans that are too big. Lead spacing is right there, etc.

The digikey and mouser searches are great but do take a little learning.
The first thing to do is to check off the box that says to show in-stock parts only, that will narrow it down a lot.

Amen, I want to know what I can order, not things that could be made for me if I wanted 10,000 of them.

I also turn on the "intelligent search" or whatever it is called.
