The first one I was using was a Weber Signature 12 25watt alnico that had been reconed. I thought the cone had a cut in it but it was a seam in the cone that had seperated. The other speaker I am using now is a Weber Signature 12 50watt ceramic.

I asked because cone cry can sound an awful lot like ghost notes. I was fully expecting you to say you were using a V30 Celestion (they all cry). But some of the Webers cry too much also. Though the signature line isn't made by Ted I might try another amp through the cab just to see if you still get the same thing. If you do, it's probably cone cry.

        Ghost notes gone

I finally had some time to work on this amp today (it's raining here). I had tried replacing the 1k in the power supply with a choke but that didn't help. After thinking about it for a while I put the choke between the rectifier and the 1k resistor. That killed the ghost notes but dropped the B+ way down so I clipped a 33uf cap from the rec. to ground. That brought the B+ right back up and the ghost notes still seem to be gone.

Is the 33uf cap safe to leave there or is it too much for a GZ34? I think a 5y3 is only rated for a 10uf but I've seen them with 20uf as the first cap.

FWIW I think 33uF-47uF would be okay for a GZ34.

Thanks for the reply Tubeswell. I swapped out the 33uf for a 16uf to see if I could save some space in the chassis and that seems to work as well so I think I'll stick with that for now. I should be able to swap in a 5y3 if I want. Now I think I'll put in a switch to lift the tone stack for some boost on single coil pickups.
