  • Scooooorrrreeee!!!!!!

Living here in pastoral Blissfield MI is far from the high life.

There is an old downtown area and a stoplight at Main st and SR223.

Well on that main street is no less than 4 antique shops with one of them covering 3 buildings with a basement and 2 upper floors in each of those buildings.

I make it through once a week, usually on Wednesdays. I look for old tube electronics in non working condition for the vintage parts and have all the various vendors looking out for odds n ends for me. I'm lucky to get something every month, but its fun and pretty affordable.

Today just a half hour ago one of the vendors came in with a long box. he said he knew I liked to play with amps.

I tried very hard to supress my glee when we opened the dusty old box labled in marker "tolex and grillecloth for amplifier"

4 yard of rough blonde tolex in 1 sheet
2 yards rough blonde tolex in another sheet
2 yards of wheat speaker grill cloth
3 yards of oxblood grill cloth
1 reciept dated 1966 from a musc store I've never heard of in Toledo

I had to dig deep for the $15 he was asking and resited the urge to talk him down to $10

    the grille cloth unfurled perfectly
the tolex is a bit stiff but it doesn't have any cracks I've seen so far.
I plan on tumbling it a bit in the dryer on low to soften it up a bit and lie it flat in the living room to cool without wrinkles or creases
I'll then roll it up on a cardboard tube for safe keeping.

I'm not a huge fan of the Blonde look so I doubt I'll build a blonde cabinet, hopefully I can find someone who is restoring an original piece where a treasure like this can find a suitable use.

    WOW!

    Did they make blonde Supers?
I have an old stripped yamaha (I think) cab that's about the size of a Super Reverb with 4x10" speaker holes. Someday I'm gonna build something with it....that would look cool in blonde, but not nearly deserving of such a great score!

according to the amp guide they made blonde:

Bandmasters 6G7A 61-63 in rough blonde with oxblood in 61-62 and beige brown late 62-63

      and the

Twin 6G8 and 6G8A in rough blonde with oxblood in 61-62 or beige brown in 63

the Showmans 6g14 60-63 were white tolex with maroon grill cloth 60-62 as were all the other "Blondes" of that era

the supers of that era were brown tolex

      http://www.ampwares.com/fender.asp

on closer inspection the grill cloth may be maroon and not oxblood and the wheat may be the brown beige.

if any one is seriously interested i would send them a small swatch of what they are interested in.

while my motivation for passing along such a find would be monetary I really would like to see this stuff on a restoration of an original piece.

not to say I couldn't be pursueded. heck I remember back as a kid and junking out complete pony interiors from mustangs

not my biggest score in those shops tho.

I found a black 83 Les Paul studio that was beat up pretty good.

The neck looked liek a banana, the truss rod cover was missing, two pots sheared off at the shafts, the pickup trim ring was broken, the back pot cover was held on by a #10 wood screw ( just one thank God)

I figured it was worth the $40 they were asking.

I gave it to my son and told him to take it to my buddy Rick and Rick would get it in good working condition if it could be done. $200 in parts later, 20 hours of leveling frets and adjusting the truss rod, re wiring pots n pickups it was a REAL nice playing guitar, just a bit road worn.

now the sad part, my son was faced with a $300 bill from Rick.
so the turd (my son) SOLD it to a friend of his at school for $350

I promised him I would never buy him another guitar again so long as I had a breath in my body
