I was watching a floor finisher do some pine flooring, and they sealed the wood, put a clear coat on, then applied stain / tinted finish over that, just because pine finishes so unevenly. Thats how we did it in school on furniture as well. (pine is cheap, and cheap pine is pretty sappy)
