I too love the EV'S, many years ago I was able to maintain an EV dealership for only 3500. minimun per year. My band and all of the other local bands got great deals, and great equipment. I just built a speaker cabinet with some 12S that I still had. They have more of a midrange punch, that's great for guitar or vocals.

Count me as another 12L fan. I have a collection of them.

As an amp builder, one thing I like is that what you hear from a 12L is the AMP, not the speaker.

I'm curious how the reissues compare to the originals. I'm assuming that the new ones are made somewhere in Asia.

I looked up what the 12S and 12L speakers cost me 20 years ago, 93.00 in lots of 12 or more! Ahh the good old days.

            Speaker Cabs

I was thinking of getting either an oval back 2x12 Avatar or whipping up two TL806 per EV ( http://archives.telex.com/archives/E...rs%20Plans.pdf ).

I heard the TL806's kill but I would like a little more chill in my kill. Can a ported cab do that without being honky? Maybe I should homebrew one L806 and one open back...

Another problem: My application could potentially be for either a '68 twin or a '69 YBA-1A (read tight, crushing Marshall Super Lead). The twin (AB763)has been headed and I had planned on restoring with a new cab and putting in some JBL analog or EV's.

Is the twin worth restoring (from the standpoint of tone and to a lesser extext collectability (black line. drip edge, SF AB763)? or Would I be good with just the Avatar oval back (806 would sound tight on the Twin i'm guessing)

            Any thoughts EV meisters?
How do you run your EVM's for:
            Fender?
            Marshall?

The cabinet I recently built, is based on the 806 series. Instead of the middle port of the 806Q, Use the port dimensions from the 806. Years ago I built a pair for mids on our PA, they really sounded great, and took some of the work off the horns. After downsizing, (the LF cabinets were also 13 cu ft EV's), I was working with a country band, and the steel player used one in a pinch, and loved the low freq. possible with the cabinet, and the higher freq. from the 12S speakers. I am attempting to learn the steel guitar, and thats why I built this cabinet. I attempted to load a picture, but as usual, it's not cooperating, maybe I'll try later. Well I tried again, but my file is 2.52 MB, I guess too large to insert.

I ended up buying an 8 ohm avatar oval back cab G12H/V30 and pulling two tubes on the Twin to match the impedance. Sounds really good but the restoration project is still proceeding, as funds allow.

That speaker must be sounding fantastic Steve.

I 've got two old ones. Where did you buy it ?
Oh and do you use it for guitar or bass , I thought bass is your main instrument , isn't it ?

                    Regards, Alf

                      Hi all

I got it from Comms And Sound in the UK. Yes, it sounds nice, but it's a bit darker than other 12" speakers I've tried. It makes me wish the amp had a presence knob, or even room to make a hole for one.

My main instrument is electric guitar, I've been playing since I was about 13. I switched to bass for a while because I wanted to go gigging, and it was much easier to get gigs as a bassist.

In any case, it sounds good with bass too, could blow an Ampeg fliptop off the bandstand

I've been using the 15L non-stop since 1978. now THAT would be a great speaker to reissue.

Coincidentally, I just a Mesa Boogie 1x12 closed back (vented) cab off eBay. I got it pretty cheap. It arrived yesterday. I don't know how old it is, but I opened it up and it has a no-label EVM 12 L. That's when I saw this thread and figured I could ask a couple questions...

I've never owned a "proper" closed-back cab before. Other than a couple of crappy home-built 1x12 closed cabs (no thought went into sizing or design or construction), I've always had open-backed combos.

Not surprisingly, this closed back EVM cab sounds REALLY different than anything else I've owned. I don't think that I like it at all. My main problem with it is that there is zero (and I mean zero) sizzle. None. It's all low-mid thump (which is kinda cool) and mid frequency honk. Where is the presence? The sound from this unit does not reach out and grab one's attention at all. The question is, is it the cab or is it the speaker?

For comparison, I only have my Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue (Jenson?). I also still have those home-built 1x12 from my teenage years. Each of those 1x12 is loaded with a Peavy 12" that I took from an early 80s Peavy 2x12 4x6L6 combo. What's the Peavy label..."Black Shadow", "Black Widow", I forget.

The amps that I'm using to evaluate the cab are my heavily modified DRRI (I added a Mark IV type of high gain channel...the clean DRRI is stock). I also have a Boogie Triaxis / 2:90 setup that I just dragged out of storage. With either setup, this cab is totally unengaging.

Any thoughts? What kind of speaker might be a better choice? I typically play at home with friends, so there's no need for continuous tolerance of 100W+. I like clean, mildly pushed, crunchy distorted, and saturated liquid tones...whatever seems fun that day. Ultra-scooped metal is usually not in my palette (probably because I've never had a proper closed-back cab before). Thoughts?

                          Thanks,

                          Chip

My cabinet that I made is the same, all thump and honk compared to previous speakers that I've owned.

My amp has a parametric EQ, and it ends up set with a big boost centred on 4kHz to get enough presence. It doesn't have a presence control and I wish there was one. I tried hardwiring one in, set to 10, and it really livened up the clean tones, but then the dirty ones would take my head clean off, so I had to take it out again.

Steve, if I wanted a little more sizzle, what speaker/cab would you recommend instead?

                              Thanks,
