  • fold in tolex

So I get my tolex and it has been folded up for god knows how long and has a really pronounced crease in it where its been folded. The point where it has been creased is right in the middle, so right down the center (front to back) of my combo amp cabinet! Will heat get the crease out or will I have to pull it extremely tight to get it out?

    thanks,
    BD

Good question. Is there some scrap with the crease that you can experiment on?
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

      Bill,
I have dealt with creased tolex. I left it laid out flat in the sun for a day to relieve the crease as much as possible. Then I cut my pieces and applied as usual. There was still some crease evident but the glue held it down flat when I smoothed it out with my hands during application. (I use contact cement for tolex)

If I wasn't ready to use it after the sun treatment, I store it rolled up tight on a 4" cardboard tube procured from behind a carpet store.

Once I got some lightly lacquered tweed that was shipped folded. I actually ironed that before storing but I don't think I'd take the change of ironing tolex.

      Regards,
      Tom

        Tom & Enzo,

thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it. An update on this, the store I bought this from, 8th Street Music Online, advertised it as 66" x 60" Peavey Tolex. When I got it, it was infact Peavey Tolex, but only 54" x 60". I've called them about it and hope to get this piece replaced with what I paid for. So, hopefully when I get what I ordered, it won't have such a crease in it, but I"m not holding my breath!

An update to the update! It seems that Peavey changed the size some time ago and the 8th street folks didn't pick up on it. I guess they don't sell much of that. I think the 54 x 60 piece is big enough, but the reason I purchased this was the 66" length put my seams on the bottom instead of on the sides... and also the price. Its good quality material, so I guess I'll keep it and make do.

One possible strategy to try is to iron it out with the iron set to lower heat and a slightly damp folded dishtowel between the iron and tolex so that the tolex gets a nice gentle distribution of just enough heat to make it pliable, but not enough to stretch it or melt it.
