I use all kinds of different stuff for enclosures, so I say if it looks like it'll work without too much effort, go for it. I don't have the tooling to install a bunch of holes for sockets in sheet metal, so I generally reuse old chassis for stuff. If the transformers are mounted correctly you could probably reuse and get away with very little hum. My current project is in an old library cart and panelled with an old phonograph console's hardwood lid, so go for it! Speakers are easy to get on a budget from the huge assortment of crap people put on the curb or take to the dump, I think I've had somewhere around 20 vintage 12" speakers of various makes that I never paid a dime for . A few of them died in the line of duty, more were kicked in by bad musicians . Just gotta dig!
