  • Dumb Question about OT/Speaker Impedance

This really smacks of 'dumb question', but here goes...

You know how many vintage tube amps have a series of OT taps, 4ohm - 8 ohm - 16 ohm? Is it okay to connect to more than one tap, say, hook an 8 ohm speaker to the 8 ohm tap and a 16 ohm speaker to the 16 ohm tap both at the same time?

My preference would be to wire speakers of the same impedance in parallel, or series & use the appropriate tap.

However, you can do what you ask, just the 16ohm speaker would need to go on the 8ohm tap & the 8ohm speaker on the 4ohm tap, to stop the parallel speaker loads from pulling down the reflected impedances that the tubes see. Or, you could wire the 2 in parallel (5.3ohms) and wire them both to the 4ohm tap.
