I was given an old Peavey Classic 50 2 X 12 that was not working and had been left in a garage for a few years. The PCB board was fried in the preamp section causing it smoke whenever plugged in. If it was hand wired ptp I could have removed the bad capacitor and been done with it, but to buy a new PCB board for the pre-amp section is too much money in my opinion for a Peavy amp. I removed the chassis to reuse the cab, and cannibalized what I could for parts.
50 Watt RMS into 8 or 16 ohms
4 x EL84
3 x 12ax7
Reverb Tank
2 x 12" Blue Marvel 8Ohm Speakers
My question is what amp to build so I can reuse the transformers and tubes. The peavey has a ss rectifier so there is no 5.3V heater tap. I will have to either go with SS rectification again, or add a 5.3VAC transformer in the new build. The first circuit to catch my eye is the Hoffman style AC30 which does not include tremolo. It also uses 4 x EL84's and 3 x 12ax7 in the preamp section. Any thoughts on how feasible this would be? Is going from a 50Watts to 30Watts too big a drop? Is there another circuit that would be a better fit?
