  • New build, no ouput...What first?

Just completed a little 18-lite (single channel,Ironsounds Traveler). All the board voltages are good, tubes are lit.

My first thought was to start signal tracing at the input jacks, I can't "see" any signal on pins 2 or 7 on the V1 using my multi-meter, should I be able to? In other words, if the OT is compromised will the signal still flow ?? Thanks!

Check voltages first, make sure all are where they should be. If you verify all voltages good, try working from the output section back to the input stage. Using just your meter, probe each plate...you should get a pop thru the speaker every time you touch the meter probe to the plate connection. The pop will get louder as you work toward the input stage if its working properly up to that point. Where you lose the pop, check that stage and its interstage components.

Any hiss or hum from the speaker. I would expect something if the speaker is connected correctly to the output transformer.

Unplug the guitar and connect your ohm meter from tip to sleeve. You should measure something like 1 megohm. If you see something close to zero ohms, there is a short somewhere. Now ohm from the tip to pin 2 or 7. You should see something like 68K or 34K.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.
REMEMBER: Everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school !

0-ohms across the board loudthud ! i'm only using the 8-ohm tap, do the 4 and 16-ohm taps need to go to ground or just tape them off ?

This is a pcb kit so its pretty srtaightforward, 2-anodes go to one spot,B+ to another. All voltages are correct .

I have the 8-ohm tap going to the sleeve and the 0-ohm tap going to the tip of a 2-prong output jack and jumper wire from tip to chassis ground, is that correct??

          Thanks a bunch !!......crunch

Hate to say it but I'm pretty sure you just described wiring the output backwards and then shorting it as well...

mark, I just realized that, once I change the sleevetip error should I ground at the chassis.

I picked up the error as soon as i sent the last message...LOL, unreal !! Thanks btw

I think it would work either way it would just oscillate on you but yes you want the 8 ohm to tip and the black grounded. Sounds like you may have a wiring problem and yes you should get a very small AC milli-volt AC reading on the grids of 2 & 7. I also agree that if everything is right you should at least hear something out of the speaker not just dead silence.

What Mark and KB said, plus you tape off the unused taps (4 and 16 Ohms), do NOT ground them!

She's up and running !! Still don't know how I wired it backwards, but its been a while.Should I run a chassis ground or is the jack face enough??

                    Thanks folks!
