  • Low power from Champ style build

Hi my name is Mario and I'm new to the forum. I'm having trouble with my new Champ style build. I using a 6l6 instead of 6v6. The problem is I'm getting very low power from it about 10v pk to pk into a 12ohm load so 0.5watts correct? My other champ puts out over 5w.I've checked the OT Im using a 5k5 primary and 16 ohm secondary. I even tried another OT the power is the same. All the voltages on the power tube check out 360v othe plate 345v on the screen and a 220k grid leak resistor. About 26v on the cathode so the tube is drawing current about 50ma or so. I dont know were else to lookfor problems. Can someone please help me out!
    Thanx!
    Mario.

    10 volts x 10 volts divided by 12 ohms = 8.33 watts.
If the static voltages look good, move on to the dynamic Vac voltages.
What Vac max do you read at the 6L6 grid pin?
That is what is driving the tube.

Thanx for your reply man! I figured out the problem was in the power supply. ,A choke I had installed was "murdering" my voltages the amp had nothing to go on. A silly mistake. I was in a bit of a rush to finish ,serves me right. I scoped it and its a healthy(for a se guitar amp) 6.7 watts RMS before clipping. (well a litle clipping it is a guitar amp!) Its been quite a learning experience!
      Cheers !
      Mario

10V Peak to Peak equals about 3.5V RMS. 3.5^2 / 12 equals about 1 Watt.

Plate dissipation equals plate to cathode voltage times plate current. (360-26)*0.05=16.7W That's a little high but cathode current was used instead of plate current.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

What is your P-P input voltage on the 6L6? A triode connected 6L6GB with 20VAC input will put out 1.4 watts. Pentode connected 6L6GB with those voltages should do over 10 watts.
