  • Just starting out

I've been a tube amp owner for the last 15 years. I currently own a Dr. Z Maz Jr, and an old Garnet Stencil amp made in Winnipeg.

Now that I have some time on my hands I was thinking of building an amp and I like the 5E3. My old vintage '67 Traynor Bass Mate was a similar layout (probably where Pete Traynor got the design) 6V6's and 2 pre-amp tubes.

Any recommendations on a kit, Weber, Mission...others?

Hard to say... There are so many choices. Weber and Mojo have pretty a wide variety of kits to choose from.

However, if you want to do the 5E3 thing, I would think that Mission would be the way to go since that is what he does. I think you'll get the benefit of specialized experience.

Thanks I'll check it out. The 5E3 looks like a great amp to compliment the Doctor. I use a Tele and Les Paul and both seem to get great notes (pun intended) in reviews when paired up with the 5E3.

I considered building from just the drawings and schematics...but I'm not sure if there's a real savings or not.

No savings trying to source the parts yourself unless you have built a few. You will invariably forget something.

So there is no apparent savings and it WILL cost you time in the long run.

You may want to read up on Deluxes and mods that people have done to prevent flubbiness when using guitar with humbuckers. Its no big deal, most times changing a few coupling caps will cut some low end and fix the issue.

Actually I checked out the Weber, Mission and Ceritone sites and you're right about sourcing parts I think.

Weber's 5E3 kit complete with cab and speaker will cost me around +/-$600 CDN shipped to my door. (that sounds way too easy)

As you say, I'm still in research mode, I'm scraping the $$ together from gig money.

          Thanks

Another one you might want to check out is Trinity Amps.

I've been sniffing around, planning on building an amp. I have heard some very positive things about them, although I'm planning on doing the 18 watt marshall thing, I know they have a 5e3 too.

There is a listing on Ebay, selling a weber kit with speaker and chasis, currently at $325.

I'm starting a build now, where I have all my components, otherwise I would be bidding on that.

Eye, did you ever decide which direction to go? I've been altering my Bass Mate to get more guitar tones out of it. I'd like to build an amp like this myself, from the ground up. I only modded the input section and tone stack.
