  • help with my build - this should be eaasy

Ive built my kit (triode elec) 5e3 and it sound great for the most part. ive lead dressed and gotten hum and buz to low levels. problem i have is when playing clean it seems to distort in a nonpleasing way...
    5e3.mp3

so far i have replaced tubes, no change
    replaced speakers, no change

only thing left is OT but i hope thats not it.

    please help!!

try this site and look under tube amp debug page. it has several suggestions depending on the type of distortion you're getting.
    I hope it helps.

      this is what is says...
Sound cuts out or squawks on loud notes
      Failing coupling capacitor
Failing plate resistor, cathode bypass cap, cathode resistor or grid resistor
      Intermittent ultrasonic oscillation

anyone listened to my clip do these sound likely? like to know before i start ripping out components.
      thanks

        I listened to your mp3.

That could be cone cry. Can you try the amp with a different speaker or the speaker with a different amp?

It also could be a parasitic oscillation. Double check the lead dress.

i thought the same thing so i first had the budget weber in there. no improvement, then a celstion 30w, some improvement when still in a sealed cabinet, no improvement when in the combo enclosure. now i have the weber ferromax (100$+) speaker 50w or so. I though that would do it. light dope.

ive moved my leads around and that didn't fix much. any other ideas on how to deal with cone cry?

            Check those things.

Did they provide the schematic or did you use a different one?

Does it distort at all volume levels?

it is mostly during the 'clean drive' settings. as in the mp3. once i get up to distortion levels the distortion is masked by the actual tube distortion (the good kind)
