  • 5E3: volume pot interaction

I'm trying to get my 5E3 better and better by taking out little bugs.

all voltages are great, biassing seams to be around 39.8 - 40.6, so i'm not worrying about that anymore.

One thing I noticed is that the volume pots of the Bright & normal channel interact with each other.
eg: if plugged into the normal channel with all volume pots down, I have no sound. But when slowly turning up the bright volume pot, I get little sound.
It also works the other way.

I guess it should be a simple fix.

    Thanks,
    Wim

Actually, the channel interaction is how it was originally designed.

I usually plug into the bright channel with its volume at around 6, and set the unused channel volume to 9 1/ 2 or so...it really thickens the sound. Turning the unused channel volume all the way up yields what I think sounds close to a blackface tone.

      thanks,

      easiest fix ever I guess.

The last thing I wanted to check is the grounding of the preamp & output section.

All Cathodes ground (of the 12AY7&12AX7) after resistor going to 1 point on the chassis is that the way to go? Together with the Jack & pot grounds.

For the output section: I've grounded the 6V6 cathode resistor with the B+ cap at the same point with the center tap of the Power T.

      Thanks

        That's a good start.

That's going to depend on several other things. It will probably work if the preamp filter cap is grounded to the same point and there is no wire between that filter cap and the screen filter cap. The power amp section should have an independant chassis ground point, prehaps at the speaker jacks.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.
