G'Day from Australia - Just popped in to introduce myself and say Hi to ALL... I go by the handle of frostbite..... (frozen dracula) Cool Sucker.... I have just finished my second 5E3 Tweed amp this afternoon..... What a week it has been, very frustrating at times..... but I can sit back and enjoy the fruit of my labour whenever i choose to, now...... After my first build, which started as an old PA Amp and ended up as basically a 5E3 Tweed head.... just to see if I could actually build it .... Mind you I had to rewire it to stop the hum..... and then it had a bad pot in it and hummed on the brite channel..... but NOW it has been gutted for some parts for the new build.... and when I turned it on this afternoon I had to turn the volumes up to 11 before there was ANY hiss at all...
WOW ! looks like I nailed it GOOD..... QUIET AS a CHURCH MOUSE...... and that is what I was aiming for..... I done a lot of research on the net before I finally got this sucker built.... and it was NO store bought item either..... ALL from scratch, starting with a Hammond Alloy Blank chassis and an old large power transformer around 1950's vintage.... checked and tested by the seller - an ex radio technician from Sydney NSW, now living in retirement on the south coast of NSW..... I have a couple of sources for parts.... Arthur at EVATCO in Victoria and Victor (Vittorio) Mazzarollo - VicMazz on eBAy - Both these gents are top notch and good with their service and prices..... not like some others here in Australia - some are downright rippoff artists.... they lose my business for sure....
The Build is basically as per the Mission Tweedy Deluxe layout - Many thanks for these plans, Mr Bruce Collins I believe is the one responsible - Thank you kindly..... I have however made some modifications.... and thanks go to the guys over at S2 Audio Technology and ThunderTweak amps (I will find the links if anyone is interested)....
The Volume Tone setup from S2 is excellent...... Well done guys.... Also a Big Thank You to the guy/s at the Fender Blues Junior website.... I copied your ANTI HUM device - Could have helped - I know something surely did, and boy am I gratefull.... many thanks.....
I wasn't real sure which way to go with a speaker, I had heard so many reports about so many of them, but things are limited here in Aus.... unless you want to import from USA.... I was going to go with either a Jensen or a Locally made Lorantz (Greenback copy) - but another option popped up on ebay and I grabbed it - an Eminence Delta 12" for a ridiculous price of $65AU... I had to at least give it a try..... Well I am impressed, very nice tone quality, great highs, clear as crystal, and a distinctive growl for the bottom end.... and when cranked it really delivers a vibrant breakup but NOT to early like some of the others I have read about... seems a failing of the Jensens....
Anyway to one and all - I am one very happy frostbite at the moment and I just had to take time out to share my latest build with some other enthusists of the fabulous 5E3 Tweeds - I will try and keep in touch with anyone who wishes to correspond / converse with me.... By the way my guitar is a Standard Johnson Les Paul style Cherry Burst.... and of course I play the Blues - mainly improvisation - as that's what is inside of me and it just wants to get out through those strings and this new HOT AMP....
Cheers to Ya All.... have a good Holiday Break.....
