  • 5e3 Ampeg Mod

My Weber 5e3 kit is on the way. Research has piqued my curiosity regarding the Ampeg or Paul C Mod, as cleaner and louder before breakup appeals to me. Some say that little change can be noted with this mod. Others say it is a great and worthwhile mod.

As it is clearly laid out on the internet (and it appears to be fairly simple to do straight away during the board assembly) I am tempted to do it straight away.

Any thoughts by the thoughtful and experienced members here (who have been immensely helpful to me already - thank you!) will be appreciated.

There has been much discussion of the Paul C Mod on this board. A recent update to the Forum software made changes to the search function so you may have trouble finding things but keep trying, it's in here somewhere.

This thread: http://music-electronics-forum.com/t5837/ touches on some of the issues.

    And another: http://music-electronics-forum.com/t14009/

    A good one: http://music-electronics-forum.com/t14923/

loudthud, are you saying that you like (prefer over the stock 5e3 design) the paul c mod with the resistor change you specify?
or is the stock design good enough left alone?

It is easy enough to do either way. If I did the paul c mod, I would heed your sage advice and use the bigger resistor
      as you pointed out.

I have three 5E3 type amps. A vintage one with no mods. A 2x6V6 guitar amp with a bass control, see partial schematic here: http://music-electronics-forum.com/t23763/ and a 2x6L6 harp amp that follows the Paul C mod fairly closely. I really don't have a strong preference either way.
