  • 5E3 Resistor ?'s

    Hi all,

I've been lurking around this site for a while, and have learned a lot from you guys. I have a simple question: I've seen some using 2W resistors for the 5K and 22K resistors near the filter caps, and seen some listing only 1/2W. What should I use here? I know from the 6V6 cathode I need a 5W resistor. Can I use 1/2 watt for the rest of the 5E3? Any other resistors I should be concerned about?

Thanks all for any help you have to offer!

The 5k should be at least 5watts,I would use a 10watt here. The 22k can be 2 watts, but a 5watt would be safer.5W is okay for the cathode resistor,I would prefer 10watt here for the extra safety margin.1/2 watt is okay for all the rest of the circuit.I happen to have a lot of 1watt 100k resistors so I use them for plate load resistors for the added safety margin, but 1/2 watt will do.

5 watts is OK if you have the room and are looking for bullet proof... but, in the 5E3 with 6V6s, a 2 watt 4k7 to 5k1 resistor is enough.

I use flame proof resistors in the B+ rail of the 5E3... a 2 watt 5k1 metal oxide on the first node and the second node uses a 1 watt 22K Mtl Ox resistor.
I've never had a blown 22K preamp node node resistor in a 5E3 but I have seen the standard 4k7 or 5k1 screen node resistor overheat and loose value when a builder/player, not planning ahead and starts runninig 6L6s and then one of the 6L6s goes bad, drawing excessive screen current.
The 5 watt cathode biasing resistor should be fine since a 100ma draw across it is only 2.5 watts.

        Thank you!

        Thanks Stokes and Bruce,

You guys are so helpful! After a couple years of learning and watching; now my first order is submitted and build number one is under way.
