  • Just finished the kit, but..

    Hey Guys,

What a great little amp! I love the sound in the bright channel, but I'm having a problem with the normal channel.

The sound is really wimpy and if I try to use the 5-way switch on my strat or the volume knobs, I get a really loud noise. I can actually hear the wiper in the guitar's volume pot moving across the coil! No problems in the bright channel though.

Any thoughts on the fix? I've been through the wiring diagram about twenty times and I can't seem to spot my mistake.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Presumably the guitar is plugged into inputy 1 of either channel. Almost sounds like the input resistor is not on the #1 jack of the normal channel.

Congrats, btw. My Mission 5E3 is my new favorite amp.

Actually Barry, it's the normal channel either input 1 or 2. Inputs 1 & 2 of the bright channel work great!

The resistors are installed and just to satisfy my curiosity I removed the 1m resistor from the normal channel and tested it. It read .580 on the 2m setting on the multimeter.

Thanks for the tip though, and I agree with you. The 5E3 is my new favorite amp. Joe Walsh, Billy Gibbons, etc. were onto something! I feel sorry for those poor suckers who'll shell out the big bucks for a re-issue. Don't you?

I'd probably be looking at the grid stoppers for that channel maybe next then, keeping in mind that I know next to nothing. I am just throwing ideas out there.

I suppose it is possible something is amiss with the triode driving the normal channel. What happens when you mess with the normal volume pot? There should be interaction without the channels bridged and I am curious how it affects your particular situation.

Well, I get definate volume boost for about three quarters of the knob action, then it drops off a bit. Strange, isn't it?

Yeah, that's pretty standard fare for these, and the beauty is in the range of tonal possibilities with this very interaction.

The normal channel on mine does not exhibit the behavior you describe in your initial post. I hope you get it sorted out. Keep us posted. Bridging the channels is a really fun option.

Looking forward to it! Man, you should hear a gretsch 6120 nashville through this rig. Awesome! Setzer City (without the reverb).

Yeah, they are cool. I have a '68 Guild Starfire IV so I have an idea. My current favorite is my TA P-90 equipped Cobra.
