  • 5e3 master volume???

Anyone tried a post phase inverter master volume in their 5e3? I'm wondering how much distortion actually comes from the PI. Thinking about trying the matchless spitfire type of master volume. Comments?

Viewing the audio signal from both coupling caps out of the PI, the signal is distorting before the power tubes are.
That's why cleaning up the PI balance and using less bass or gain in the preamp sections can make the amp seem cleaner to a degree but still go into massive tweed 5E3 distortion anyhow.
I don't like the cross cut MVs.

Thanks Bruce. Would you recommend something similar to this instead?

        That's pretty complicated for a 5E3.
Just because I don't like cross cut MVs doesn't mean you or other don't too.
I'd just try the cross cut one first and see if you like it.
        Use a 500K 12%-20% audio pot and a .047uF cap.

I'll have to check my stash of caps to see if I have an .047 I assume it makes no difference as to which side the cap goes on? Thanks again.

I like the Crossline MV myself. The only thing that realy bugs me about it is the volume jumps up so quickly regardless of the type of pot used (aud or lin).
