  • 5e3 math and volume questions

Hi, I just finished my first 5e3. It runs quietly and sounds good but if my math (and logic) is right it seems to be running a bit hot. What I have is:

    Plate: 370v
    Cathode: 21.7v/250ohm= .087a
    349.3*.087 = 30.38 or about 15 watts per tube

    B+ voltages are 384-349-263

15 watts seems a bit hot- have I figured this right?

Also- The amp doesn't really seem any louder than my 5f2a, and depending upon the speaker, is quieter. I'm used to the 5f2 with a reissue jensen p10R and the 5e3 has a weber 12a125. If I use a 12ay7 in v1 and the weber, the 5e3 cranked is actually quieter than the 5f2 with the jensen. If I put a 12ax7 in v1 of the 5e3 and play each amp through the same speaker- the 5e3 is probably a bit louder than the 5f2 - but not much

does this seem right? - Thanks

Voltages are only a bit high... probably OK enough.
The power tubes are idling too high and I don't know why unless the tubes are very soft.
I prefer to see around 10-12 watts per tube.
At about 12 watts output to the 12" speaker and bigger cabinet, the amp should be about twice as loud as your 5F2A.
If the 12AX7 does sound louder then I think you are answering your own questions as a 12AY7 will turn the 5E3 inside out!
If the OT and PT are OK, even if the tubes a re little soft, you probably have some kind of wiring error.

6v6's are jj's rated 26/3.0 OT is MM with a self lead on the seccondary. I did not ground the speaker jack directly to the OT- should I?

Any way to test an OT?

      Thanks.
