cutoff distortion

Any one have an idea what to do about the harsh cutoff dist an a 5e3 amp. how to make it cleaner?

why is it that this kind of amp donīt eat stompboxes like ex. vox ac-30.

Many people (including myself) have had great results from this very simple mod (4 diodes, two resistors if needed). IME it really reduces output-stage overdrive harshness and 'mosquito-tone' without affecting the clean tone at all, but as always, YMMV.

Hey that cool. It seems like it will work, is it not a problem to make this mod with 6v6 tubes on my deluxe.

No problem - it will work well with 6V6's in a Deluxe. I would get 12V, 15V, 18V, and 22V Zeners (500mW or 1W is good), and try all of them - you will like one of them better (maybe the 15V ? - I don't know). The diodes connect across the 220K grid resistors in the 5E3 circuit, just as in the Paul Ruby link.

Agreed on this mod being good. I haven't needed it with any 6V6 amps for whatever reason, but it is magic with EL84's. Worth a try anyway, it doesn't seem to change the tone very much other than getting rid of the nasties.

Just curious; have you tried different power tubes or a different speaker?
