I find that a short "slap-back" delay with no feedback works well before a cranked amp, while longer delays with feedback, or reverb, does not.
I would get a second amp and run the wet delay signal to it. Either just split the signal to both amps, or take the signal from a DI-box on the primary amp speaker signal to the delay and then to the second amp.
