The 5E3 looks like it uses a tone knob that places a capacitor in parallel to the resistor between volume center and volume-to-grid. In other words, the frequency of the treble end varies with the volume.

Is this true?
Looking at the bright channel, the treble half of the tone control is wired like a variable bright cap across the volume control. So with the volume control dimed the bright cap would basically be shunted out of the circuit. Although the setting of the tone control would have an effect of the bass half of the tone control.
