  • 715 vs 716 OD's

    Hello forumites

What's the sound difference between these Orange Drops?
I'm doing the "less bass" mod &I only have three .022 715's but have lots of 716s. I think I remember reading the 716's were more "hi-fi/sterile" sounding. Is that true? Is there a preference between the two versions on 5E3's? If so what spots would I want to use the 715's instead of the 716's?

    Cheers
    Sean

i prefer mallory 150's. ive read where if you combine orange drops and 150's you get the best tone.

i read orange drops for bass and mid, silver mica for treble gave the best tone.

a guess as to the 715 vs 716 is the insulator material between the plates. some wild tech term, I forget the word, but it has something to do with when opposite forces bridge the gap between the plates, I may be wrong so keep checking.
      a recent conversation,
..."why not just buy an amp?".. 'cause I'll just have to tear it apart and fix it anyway.

To my knowledge the 715 series has copper plated steel leads and the 716 series has pure copper leads. This gives the 716 slightly lower ESR and higher current capacity. Info came from the SBE rep. I worked on a project that had a series resonant circuit that had to pass 10 amps pk-pk at 166KHz. Ended up using two .047uF @600V 716's in series. Some of the other caps I tried just melted with that much current. The OD's never failed and were low cost.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

I have tried the 716's in a number of projects. I can't find the best words to describe their "sound" but I think "sterile" or "hard" is probably pretty close. For example, I built a typical Fender clean circuit using 716's (with mica HF) and found that it lacked any subtlety for playing through. It was almost too fast & precise to be enjoyable. I use 715's all the time (with Mica HF) and find that they are just fine (I've never tried the mallorys).

I still have some 716's in my box but I now reserve them for when I think I need that extra detail (mostly hi gain stuff). I do find that I like the 716's for use as shunt, or treble bleed, caps. I think the lower ESR there works well.

          Good luck.

I thought the 716's had real copper foil & polypropylene while the 715's are just vapor deposited foil & polypropylene.

Maybe i read that wrong somewhere?

A few months ago I wondered about this kind of thing. I might have even posted a similar question to this forum, I can't recall. After much reading and thinking, I am of the school of thought that caps is caps. People claim to have preferences in which caps they use, but has anyone actually done an A/B test with caps? I'd be curious to hear if anyone actually has. I'd imagine it would be more trouble than its worth, except to provide an anecdote in this tired debate.

Until someone has done some real objective testing in this regard, I think this topic can be put on the Coke/Pepsi Ford/Chevy Potayto/Potahto list.
