Is 47mfd at 500v too large for the first two filters in a tweed Champ?

    Thanks,
    Tim C.

Certainly fine for the main filter, probably for the screen supply too though you might not NEED to go that big - it won't hurt anything...as long as you like the tone. Keep to 8/10uf for the preamp.

No not really but if you are using a 5Y3 rectifier, which is nearly full on within a couple moments of power up, I would stick a 2 watt, 27 to 47 ohm resistor in series with the lead wire after the rectifier and before the first 47uF capacitor just to keep some of the momentary, high "start up" current from stressing the 5Y3.
When discharged from sitting off, the 47uF@500v cap will look like a larger dead short to the 5Y3 for a couple seconds.
