  • Resistor hiss, noisy grid

I've got hiss in my preamp so I changed the 100k plates and 1meg on the inputs to carbon film but it only helped a little.
Would 1 watt CF's be much better?
Did I heat them too much when soldering?
I've tried plenty of tubes so it's not that.
    What else could I change?

Also I've been plagued by grid hum on the wires of the pots.
It stops if I touch the chassis or if I insulate the back panel with aluminum tape.

    Please help!

    Noisy preamp

The annode resistor could be the problem, even if a bypass capacitor is used.

Try it. The bypass capacitor might be worth lifting off, if one is used

That is exactly why the back panel should be sheilded, make sure the alluminum tape or foil or whatever material you use makes good contact with the chassis.Using shielded leads on the pots will help also.
