  • Champ 5F1 cab -possible to fit a 10" in?

Hi, specifically the 13.5x12x8 std narrow panel 5F1 tweed champ which uses a low set 8" baffle: is it poss a remade baffle with a low set 10" can go in ok?

    thanks, capt

Yep, as long as you have got 10" clear on the back-side, and have enough clear room for the basket and magnet assembly. (Not all 10" speakers are the same)

Thanks, as the baffle is 10.25 x 11. something I know I can mount it ok.. but are you sure a std say 4 & 1/4" deep 10" speaker will not clash with the trannies, or indeed the chassis?

has anyone used a std Champ cab with a 10" speaker? if so could you tell me which spkr used?

      thanks, capt

Hmmm... Not all 10" speakers are created equal - but some are more equal than others :-)

So what I would do is:

        1) Check out the manufacturer's dimensions, for example:

        http://www.eminence.com/guitar.asp?speaker_size=10

If you're concerned about it, pick out one with the flattest possible basket

        2) make up a little mock 2D template of a cutaway section out of a piece of cardboard based on the dimensions and if that still looks tight then

        3) lower the position of the baffle hole

yes good thinking to check 1st etc. You see Ive been asked to make a champ for s'one with baffle for a 10"- I guess he hasn't yet decided on exactly which spkr..

as the clearance would be only 1/8" (!!) at top and bttm of baffle Id obviously set as far down as can be from the off- its the rear spkr 'slope' clashing with the power trannie thats the concern- std depth, say of 4.25" is just ok (if I make cab safe @ 8.5"D).

I know there were some thread pages on this topic on the www.. but Ive spent ages googling for them without finding.

Sorry for the necropost. I studied the same possibility. The dimensions you gave are actually for the 5E1 (originally 13 x 12.5 x 7.5"), and the magnet of the speaker (if the speaker is 4 5/8" tall) will intersect with the chassis. The only way to pull this off is to make the cabinet deeper by at least 1.5". The other alternative is to use the larger 5F1 cabinet, measuring 13 x 14.5 x 8 7/8". The extra height and depth make the speaker barely clear the chassis and tubes. See Marsh Amps for their cabinet (which can be ordered with a 10" baffle preinstalled).

I built my 5F1/F2 variation in a wide panel Deluxe (5D3) style cabinet which took a 10' speaker fine. But you might be a bit cramped for space. as Tubeswell says all 10" speakers are not exactly the same. One might fit and the next one might not.

Just be vary careful you don't let any of the magnetics come in contact or too close the the speaker magnet. I let the PT get really close to a 10" ceramic speaker magnet when I put the chassis in a temp cabinet, on a firefly build, and the PT went up in smoke from the overlapping fields. Hammond (& AES) made good on the new PT, but it was my fault. It all worked fine until I put it into a cabinet.

Ah, good point! I forgot about magnetic interference...

I've never seen that happen... and I suspect it wasn't the speaker... weird things happen though.

I saw it happen Bruce, right before my very eyes. It all worked fine outsie of a cabinet but when I installed it in a cabinet too close to the speaker the volume dropped and it began to smoke. If you have an alternative explaination I would like to hear it.

I really don't have an alt explanation... I do do know that weird things happen regardless of what common sense tell me though.
I have a 30 watt amp opened up here, where I can cleanly get all around the power tubes, I'll shove a powerful NEO magnet around the glass and see what happens.
Maybe I just have never had a powerful enough speaker magnet close enough to a tube where it's plates and structures all line up for the perfect storm.

                      added...
I was thinking vacuum tubes and speaker magnets.
I just noticed you said it was the flux lines from the PT... that might be different then a magnet which does not really have alternating flux lines... right?
