  • Speaker Advice - Recone 1961 Jensen P12N?

I have a 1961 Jensen P12N with an original cone that I am using in my Mission 5E3. I play at volumes from 6 to 10. I never use pedals. I first put the speaker in a blackface deluxe reverb and got massive speaker distortion. However, it does just fine in the tweed deluxe. Since I have never blown a speaker, I don't know the consequences if it were to blow. So here are my questions:

Should I go ahead and spring for $40-$50 for the recone?
    -or-
Use it and deal with it when it blows (if it blows)?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    That's it. IF.

I don't think it will blow just like that. A P12N is rated at around 50w. Even if you consider the age the speaker should be fine with either the 22w of the deluxe reverb or the 15w of the 5e3.
Keep your money and enjoy the sound of your vintage speaker.
And IF it blows (someday) you can have it reconed anyway.

I would not recone a working Jensen speaker of that vintage. If you recone it to the same specs, you are in little less danger of blowing it than if it's original.

If you're concerned about blowing the speaker, I'd set it aside and get a different one. But as txstrat says, wattage wise, you should be fine.
