  • Low Powered Tweed Twin 5E8A

I'm thinking about building the 5E8A, and I'd like to know what's a "good" plate voltage for the original tweed twin. I see the schematic lists 405 volts, but I know that doesn't mean anything. What's typical and where do they sound sweet? On the "57 Twin Reissue", did they use the same plate voltage as the original? Also, did the original 5E8A come with 5881 or 6L6GC tubes?

I like them the best with 6L6GCs, the B+ at or under 420vdc (but above 400vdc) and with the power tubes idling at around 45ma to 55ma each.
I always try to use a NOS 5U4 rectifier.. even the NOS Svetlana 5U4s from the early to mid 80's work really well.
