  • tweed champ tone but louder ?

    Hello,
this is my first post here.
I already built a tweed champ amplifier and a brownface princeton clone.
Do any of you have an opinion on which amplifier I could build that has the tone nearest to the tweed champ, but with more volume and bigger bass?
I was thinking the deluxe 5E3 would be nice ...

    any opinions?

    thanks

    Hi Maxime -

I would look at the Angela Super-Single-Ended amp (you might google for further information) that essentially is a Tweed Princeton (which principially is a Champ with a one knob tone control and a meatier OT) with two parallel wired 6V6s in the power section. I build one with an old Isophone 15" alnico speaker for a buddy last year and must say it sounds like a Champ on steroids.
The Angela circuit gives you the possibility to switch between a 12AX7 and an octal 6SL7 in the preamp. We prefer by far the 6SL7 and don't use a 12AX7 anymore so that I'd recommend to do without the noval socket for the 12AX7 for the case you have not enough space in your chassis. The 6SL7 sounds so much bigger, rounder and beefier than a 12AX7.

Have a merry Christmas and pleasant holidays!

I built 2x6L6 parallel Champ that I'm VERY happy with.

I'll second the Angela Super-Single-Ended amp - I haven't built that specific one but did build a very similar one from a kit by STF Electronics. I liked it so much I built another from scratch and run them in a stereo config. Through a 212 cab I never have the volume above like 2.

          Welcome to the forums.

I agree with the 5E3 build. I have always preferred the sound of 6V6's distorting, but I don't know how much it'll sound like a Champ being push-pull and all.. it will have more bass, and more output though.

Thanks you all for the replies,

and merry christmas by the way!

I'll try modding my 6G2 princeton which is very similar to a 5E3 Deluxe, except for gain values on the first stage and mostly the presence of negative feedback loop. that will give me insights on how a real Deluxe sounds.
            I'll tell you what !

            best

            Maxime
