  • Weber Tweed 5E7M Combo Amp Kit

I'm new to the forum and have been reading a lot of threads from Weber Tweed amp builders new and old.

Here's a question that maybe one of you builders out there can answer. Firstly, I just purchased a Weber Tweed 5E7M amp kit and am doing a dry run hardware assembly to check the fit of the parts. As you all know, Weber does not give explicit directions to anything on ther kits, but I don't necessarily need detailed instructions since I worked on tube type equipment in the military and have built a lot of power supplies and projects in my time.

Ok-- The issue is on Weber's chassis, they have pre-drilled holes for the Choke and the OT and the footprint fits both devices. Weber's layout drawing shows the OT between the PT and the Choke and as I stated above, the footprint on the chassis fits both.

Wiring the devices either way would work ... but I feel that placing the OT adjacent to the PT may induce 60 HZ hum into the output signal which is definitely not good. While placing the Choke adjacent to the PT will have not adverse affects since Choke is part of the power supply circuit.

Has anyone built this kit, and where did you place the Choke and OT. Or any comments on the attributes of placement of the Choke and OT.

On audio products that I have built in the past, I did not place the output devices anywhere near the power supply devices and had little or no 60 HZ hum issues.

    Hi z-man,

    welcome to the forum.
Usually I place the choke (as you stated) in between the PT and the OT. But I also did it the other way, when i didn't know better and had no issues.
Make sure the laminates of the PT and OT are placed in a 90 degree angle from each other.

I used the Weber 5E7M chassis and (mostly stock) iron as the basis for a 5F6A clone. The choke is between the OT and PT, but I did use a smaller choke since the PS is built like the 5F6A. No hum issues, amp is dead quiet.

The top speaker ( a Weber Sig 10s) only would fit with the bell cover off, otherwise it hits the OT, so possibly having the OT located closer to the PT gives more clearance?
