  • How hot does your tweed run?

Just hoping to compare notes here to see how hot people's 2x6V6 + recto tube tweed builds run (in a standard 5E3 type cab) after being on for an extended period of time.

I noticed tonight that the top (control) panel on my Tremolux build gets really quite hot after a couple of hours. The 6V6s in this are biased to about 9W each, and I'm using a 5U4GB recto. Is this typical or cause for alarm?

I built a 2x 6L6 amp in a 5E3 chassis/cab. It took about an hour but it got too hot. Even with a solid state rectifier installed, the power transformer got so hot you couldn't hold you finger on it for five seconds. I installed a power transformer from Allen which lowered the B+ some and also ran cooler. It still runs pretty hot, but after a long gig you can hold a finger on the transformer for five seconds, just barely.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

Your scenario sounds normal to me. I usually leave my amps on for 3 or 4 hours at a time when gigging. At the end of the night they sound pretty good (if I may say so myself) - The heat helps their mojo

All my tubes amps ('tweed' or otherwise), get hot. My Princeton's PT get real hot, but it's still working after over 40 years.
