  • Triode OT

Anyone try the Super TF110 OT Triode sells with their 5E3 kit? I am finishing up two identical triode kit chassis, and the first one doesn't sound as good as one I built earlier with Mercury Trafos in it. Not as loud or with the same attitude. Could be the issue is elsewhere. I will finish the other one soon, and see if it has the same affliction. If so, that would be pretty good evidence that I don't like these trafos.

As I look at the Mag Comp clone vs the Mercury clone, the Merc is more than 3X the cost. I know I like the Merc I have in the Deluxe I built previously, but is it worth that much? Or, to put it another way, is the Mag Comp worth that little?

    What did you conclude?

Can you swap the OTs and see which one sounds better to you?

Presently I have both chassis with the Triode OTs installed. Not sure I like them, but I have yet to swap one out to be sure. I just got a new Mag Comp 40-18022 tweed deluxe clone to tack in so I can A/B the two. I will report back my findings when I get around to doing that. The weather is too nice here in Maine right now to want to spend too much time in my shop.

I just bought new ClassicTone iron for a 50 watt 6L6 Build.
The OT is the 18001 with the M-6 improved steel.
Mine came from Amp Parts Direct, instead of TriodeStore.
Maybe APD gets the best ones!
          I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I just got around to an A/B test. Identical builds, one with the triode designed, much more robust OT, and one with the Mag Comp fender clone. Both with paper bobbins. The clone was great sounding, amp broke up like you'd expect, and gave the amp the usual slightly dark tone. The Triode designed bigger one was a bit louder, with more headroom, and perhaps a little brighter. Both sounded good. Seems like the bigger Triode would be useful on stage where the clone would be better suited to the studio.

Another to look at it would be the triode equipped amp can be dialed in to sound like the clone equipped amp, but not vice versa.
