  • No sound / fault finding Ashdown perfect 10 combo

Hey all, I’ve not been on this forum in a while but I have an issue with an old ashdown perfect 10 bass combo. I got it free years ago because it didn’t work, it’s not really worth anything but I’m always interested in learning how to fix things. I’m only just getting to it after moving house.

It powers on but no sound (not even hiss from the speaker). I’m getting sound from the headphone and external speaker jacks and everything seems to work well that way, but nothing at all from the built in speaker. I tested the speaker separately and that works fine

what would be the next thing you’d check?

Hi welcome... just a not to say you will get more advice if you can include a schematic otherwise there can be a lot of guessing.

In terms of your fault I would be looking carefully at that headphones jack. Most amps with this feature are arranged so that it Internally it interupts the speaker when using phones. If the speaker is ok but no sound through it then it seems likely that it's internal contacts in the phones jack socket are damaged or dirty, which is not at all unusual. See the sticky thread about switching jacks for further info.

Thank you, yeah (I should have said) I tried cleaning those but no joy… perhaps I didn’t clean them well enough? I’ll have another look!

Sometimes tapping it with a drum stick or wooden spoon will allow some sound to come through and let you know that the connector is knackered. Have you checked the PCB connections for that connector?

I couldn’t see anything obviously wrong but I tried reflowing the solder on those pins… I forgot all about the stick test! Thanks! Another thing I learned (and then forgot!) from watching the amp tech where I used to work

My experience is that Ashdown is pretty good about supplying schematics. I would contact them directly.
