  • Problem with my PEAVEY 5150 Help!!!

Okay so here's the problem. I go to practice turn on my 5150 head. The red power light comes on but the green Standby light doesn't come on and there's no sound.
I never had problems with this amp but this is what has happened about 3 months ago.
It started changing tones randomly/daily. Then the fuse when out. I replaced the fuse, Power tubes, And Pre tubes. Worked but still didnt seem right. A few months later the standby wont turn on.

I have been reading all over the internet and cant find anyone else with this problem.

    What is wrong?

Pull the amp chassis and inside it are some fuses. You should see about 4 of them. The high voltage fuse is labeled F1 and is a 2 amp fast blow. Another is the heater fuse and it is usually white ceramic or gray and about ten amps and is labeled F2. F3 and F4 are the +/- 24 volts that run several things and are 1 amp fast blow and F5 is the bias fuse and is a 1 amp fast blow. My guess is that F1 or F2 are blown and if they are it could be the culprit. If you replace these or they aren't blown then you have additional damage from most likely a tube short and may need a tech to look at it for diagnostic and repair. For next time whenever you hear volume or treble discrepencies it is time to change your power tubes. Preamp tubes will last 10 times or more longer than the power tubes.

        Got It

Okay so i took it apart and the fuse you mentioned is burnt. I am going to the store to pick up some replacements.

What would cause the fuse to go out?

Well as of lately random people have been playing my amp when i am not there. Can them turning on the amp incorrectly cause this?

You left your tubes in too long and should have changed them. They only last so long and when they go they short out and next time if you didn't change them they will do extensive damage. You got by cheap this time and the fuse did it's job. That doesn't always happen so consider yourself lucky.

THE NUMBER ONE REASON fuses blow in tube amps is bad power tubes... BY FAR.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
