  • Need help trouble shooting loudspeaker problem?

Any advice here would be helpful. I have a sound system consisting of
    four(4) dual 15" w/1" Horn speakers (tops) and four(4) single 18" subs.
I have used them quite extensively for about 3 years now.
While doing a festival, my tops simultaneously lost all of their mid-range tones. Later, after the show, I set them up and tried to trouble shoot and discovered that the tops have almost lost their signal completely.
The only sound that comes through is very faint, mono-toned, and "cracklely".

I inspected each speaker and horn. Each speaker looked solid, showing no indication visually of anything wrong with them. All the cones were good as are the horns. I then inspected the internal crossovers and noticed that each speaker cabinet had the same capacitor popped. I then replaced each capacitor and retested, but there was no improvement.

I then thought perhaps it was my rackmount crossover. So I switched everything to the "2nd" channel, but nothing changed. Now I am out of ideas. Any ideas at all would be much appreciated.
    Thanks so much. :-)

You've mentioned nothing about the amps. Those been tested?

Yes I did. I tested them as well as tried different amps. All of course of the correct power ratings for the speakers.
      Thanks.

If you blew up the high frequency drivers (which it sounds like you did) you would not notice anything wrong externally. You would have to disassemble the driver to see the problem.

The fact that you popped a cap in the crossover suggests that there was probably a little too much power being applied. The impulse from the cap popping alone could have been enough to blow the HF driver. If you take the diaphragm off of the driver you will likely find either a burned up voice coil or a shattered diaphragm.

What brand speakers are these? What model?

I just re-read you post & realized that you were saying BOTH drivers no longer worked. Sorry, missed that the first time. Is there a protection circuit in the crossover? Bulbs, relay, circuit breaker, solid state circuit breaker (polyswitch)? Any of those protection mechanisms could be toast.

I'm not sure what, if any protection circuit is built in to the crossovers. I will pull them out of the cabs and check them out. Thanks for the tip. Hopefully I will discover the little problem maker.
          Much appreciations!
