  • Ampeg J-12B (Jorio) has high voltage on 6SL7

I have recently been tweeking my Ampeg J-12B to use in the studio. (it needed many little rattles and noises found and elliminated)

I have a different set of questions now...
My RCA Tube manual lists the 6SL7 as having a maximum allowable plate voltage of 300V. I am good in all areas except one. (see attached)

The first half of valve 1 is used as the input pre-amp stage. I am getting 386V at Pin 2.
Will this hurt the tube? (Tung-Sol Ceramic based 6SL7)
What is the affect of having high voltage in this area?
How do you suggest I lower this voltage?

    Thanks,
    KingCameron

Is that plate load resistor really 120k? Or did you install a 120 ohm or 1200 ohm?
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

you show 324 at point C and 386 at pin 2. pin two should be lower than point C. you may want to recheck with another meter.

        Lemme Check

I'll double check the plate load resistor..I beleive I have already measured it...but its worth checking again...I know the cathode resistor is 2.2K, cause I just replaced it

I am using a 50V/50uf cap in place of the the 100uf bypass cap on the schematic...this is because I removed the original Astron and it was a 50uf..

See picture...I am not sure when I took it, but it generally reflects the current look of the circuit..

Too much solder smoke makin me crazy...

After looking at the actual wiring I realized that my V1 was reversed wiring from the numbers on the schematic...(pin 1,2,3 were switched with 4,5,6)

After realizing that, it meant that the ~380V was on the tremolo circuit, not the inputs.

After realizing that, I turned on the tremolo switch (set at 0)and noted that the voltage occilates between 100V and 215V...perfect!

Anyway, this amp is crazy cool...It sounds waaaayyy better than some of my Deluxes...
