  • new 6505+ crackle and pop

    Hi there,
I've never owned a tube amp before and just bought a Peavey 6505+. When I turn the stanby switch on i get a crackle and pop through the cab. the sound doesn't stick around, it only does it as i flip the standby switch...I'm a rookie and i spent a lot of money so I would love it if someone could tell me if this is normal or if i should have it looked at.

    thanks,
    Danny

The crackle could be arcing so you definitely want to get it checked. I have a 6505 on my bench. It crackles. I can rock one power tube and it crackles, I moved the tube to another socket, and it was the tube. The amp is only two years old so I don't know why the tube went bad.

The tube sockets used by Peavey are not the best one's, especially when they are PCB mounted. However, a tube can go bad easily if e.g. the Amp is moved or even rocked with hot tubes for example. On the other side I had cases in the past where thinner tube pins do loose contact in older sockets because the contacts have been opened wider by thicker tube pins...
