  • Peavey Classic 30 with very low volume.

Hi. Im new here. Just registered so that I could maybe get someone to help me.

I just sold a Peavey Classic 30 guitar amp. Worked fine before shipping. Buyer received it, and this is what he said:

A little issue though it has very little volume(with pre and post gain cranked I can have a conversation with someone on the room). I tried both sets of power tubes with the same affect.
He is running straight from the guitar into the amp. Plugged into another amp to test the guitar and the other amp worked fine.

ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated. Im trying to avoid sending a refund.

Well if it worked fine before it left and it doesn't now I'd guess something came loose or was damaged during shipping. Preamp tubes, speaker wires, who knows what can happen when you kick a box off the back of a truck. Have him insert a foot pedal jumper cord or guitar cord into the send and return jacks to see if its lose or dirty connections in those jacks. You should contact your shipper ASAP. I hope it was insured.

I understand it could be a million things. But dirty jacks? I tested the amp before I shipped it. Could 5 days really cause such an issue? Speaker wires are soldered to the connectors. Im wondering if I knocked a solder joint loose when I packed it.

He said that it isnt even audible until he cranks it to 6 on the clean channel and 8 on the drive channel.

Buyer is being super cool. Doesnt want a refund or to open a claim. Figures he can fix it or figre out the problem without the hassle of a claim.

      Just looking for troubleshooting ideas.

Maybe one or more of teh tubes got knocked about in transit? How well was it packed? Those open back combos have a weak spot.

Onthe other hand, those PV C30s are prone to faults from broken inter-board jumpers, which can stress and crack from vibration or heat (not to mention PMT - persistent-modding trouble). In that case the only way to fix it is to open it up and fix it.

Well, I took the toobs out and packaged them like little miniature newborn babies. They were packed securely and seperate from the amp. Much care taken to making sure they wouldnt break.

the only problem is that is you're at the mercy of the tube installer on the other end. You say you checked the jacks before shipment. How exactly.

Did you use the effects send and return jacks?

DOn't try to find reasons NOT to check something. The effects loop jacks would also be my first thought. When you are NOT using them, there is a contact inside that carries the signal past. If that contact gets dirty/oxidized/bit of debris/whatever, you lose the signal. Have him plug a spare cord from e\send to return on the FX loop jacks. if it restores the sound, the jacks are the trouble. Otherwise not.

It makes weak sound, not no sound, right? SO if you knocked a speaker wire off it would make no sound. SO the speaker wires are OK.

You might have the buyer register here since he is determined to fix the problem himself. That way we could have him try things, etc., without having you being the intermediary.

                      Good luck!

P.S. While the FX loop is certainly one possibility, my thoughts are that he may have bent the tube pins when reinstalling the tubes (or otherwise damaged them). So if he could swap out the tubes one at a time that would be a good test.

I always use a pin straightener before reinserting those darned little preamp tubes.

BTW I usually label tubes with a Sharpie (V1, V2, etc.) when I pull them all out so that I can put them reinstall them in the same order that they were in.
