hi all. i had a question on an IC i ordered for replacement from a parts place.
the chip i ordered was an M5201, its an op amp used for channel switching(i suppose). i can use the "Googler" on the "internets" and find all kinds of info on this chip. great.
the chip i received was a JRC 2120d. (g003b). the "googler" cant find much on this chip. only thing i've found was it's a "toner"?

is this chip a valid replacement? same pin out ? do i need to send this back for the right one?
    thanks , rich

Yes, it is a valid sub. The M5201, a Mitsubishi IC, was nothing more than a general-purpose opamp in a SIP-8 package (Single Inline Package). The NJM2120D (the "D" is their subscript denoting an SIP-8 package) is virtually the same thing. Just about ANY SIP-8 opamp would work, including the common NJM4560D and NJM4580D.

Based on this thread (diyaudio.com) the M5201 isn't your ordinary op-amp, but describes the NJM2120 and 2121 as compatible.

And digikey describes the NJM2120D as a DIP (2 rows of 4 pins), so it sounds like you have the package you're after ... the M5201 is a DIP also, right?

        Hope this helps!

The 2120 data sheet in my JRC book looks like a suitable sub.

The M5201 is not a simple op amp, it is a switching op amp. The two op amps within the package are indeed just like 4558s. The data sheet says that specifically. But there is more in the 5201 than just the two op amps.

I note that B&D shows M5201s in stock for a couple bucks. www.bdent.com

thank you fellas for the info.
the place i ordered the chip from had it listed as a 5201, they sent me the 2120. not a big deal really, but i was a little ticked that they sent me something other than what i asked for without a heads up or return phone call. thats internet shopping for ya. i miss the good old days when you could walk into a shop and buy what you needed.

i did have a follow up question if you guys wouldnt mind.
is there any harm in "slamming" the front end of an amp with these chips?. like with a clean boost, or any pedal for that matter. its probably a dumb question, but i have wondered about it for some time now.

as always, im appreciative of the info.
              thanks again, rich
