  • Peavey 5150 combo amp fuse?

    Hello 5150 users!
I bought a used Peavey 5150 212 "combo" amp recently.
Previous owner(s) put a 5-amp fuse in there, but the manual says
3-amp fuse should be there(the head uses 5-amp fuse).

I have a box of Radio Shack fuses that says: Fast-Acting 3-Amp, 250-volt Fuse. Is this the right kind I can use?

Anyhoo, I'm trying to troubleshoot a NASTY/BLASTING low hum noise.
Can this problem be due to old pre/power tubes?

Also, previous owner installed casters on the bottom. Can carting the amp
on casters be a bad thing for tubes, e.g. bad vibrations for tubes?

I wrote email to Peavey tech support but they never responds.
I guess that's how they work. -NO SUPPORT-http://music-electronics-forum.com/images/icons/icon8.gif

-Thanks- P.s. never mind the "sad" face emoticon.

Don't have that schemo off hand but try emailing customer service at Peavey and put attention Roger Crimm in the box and he should respond. They have good cutomer service but are just swamped right now. Also feelm free to go to the peavey forum and post questions there. Lots of cool people there to help. That amp has lots of differences from the 6505 head. I'm showing 5Amp FB on 6505 also.

In my opinion, nobody has better customer support than Peavey. I don't know to whom you addressed an email - I am betting you didn't pick up the telephone and call them - or what you said in it, but in my experience the copmpany has always been responsive, and they keep parts around a LOT longer than other companies.

Whatever it says beside the fuse holder is what it needs. If it doesn;t specifically say slow blowing or time delay fuses, then we assume standard fast blowing fuses are intended. Look on the panel.

If it says 3A then plain old fast blow 3A fuses are fine, yes.

Hum MIGHT be bad tubes or it might be something else. Does the hum remain when ALL the controls are set to zero?

The 5150 combo is a 60 watt amp, while the 5150/6505 heads are 100 watt. The combo them should use a smaller fuse. Rely on what the panel says, unfortunately the primary circuits are not on the schematic.

I picked up an email addy on Peavey's web. A simple Tech Support title would've been good, but they don't want to show that. So I picked up something closest to it and filed off the email, to no response.

I had great response and explanation with DiMarzio.

As for the loud hum, I also think it's the tube(s). I played around and put spare 12ax7s, it goes away. But it manifests other problems - popping noise frequently. Being hit with loud hum noise, the popping noise makes playing with the amp a nervous situation.

I'm not sure if I should put in the fuses I have is because it says "250v" 3-amp here in USA.

If anyone knows of Peavey's Tech Support contact email addy or someone in there, I'd appreciate!

And yes, the "combo" amp is 60watts vs. the head is 100watts. The fuse is 3-amp for the combo and 5-amp for head.

What? The addresses couldn't be any clearer to me, and the toll free phone number as well.

Making up email addresses usually gets your email nowhere.

            From the peavey web site:
"If you have questions concerning product operation, support and warranty, contact one of our Customer Support Representatives toll free at 877-732-8391, by email at customerservice@peavey.com"

            customerservice@peavey.com

Also from the peavey web site:
"For assistance/status of repairs for Peavey products and scheduling factory repair appointments, email repair@peavey.com"

            repair@peavey.com

Those are from the contact information section under support.

Not listed on the web site, but also useful is Gene Ford's email: gford@peavey.com

gene is a technician who is there to help guys like you and me.

Roger Crimm is a customer service specialist, and he is also the host of the Peavey web site forum. he can be reached at rcrimm@peavey.com

Don;t worry about the voltage rating of the fuse. 3A is sufficient.

I double-checked email I've sent last week for their contact info. Yours is the same addy I sent to them. As far as the Tech Support, you are right. It IS "Customer and Technical Support" header. In either case, my email did go to right place. I guess they are just too busy and can't get back to me. Hope that they get back to me some time.

Yeah, I'm a computer tech support guy myself, and I would know that making up an email addy won't go nowhere. Cut me some slack!

              Your info well taken. -Thanks-

Sorry if I sounded sharp with you. I always prefer phone, especially if an email didn;t work.
