Ampeg V4 distorting when increasing volume

What could be possible things to look at?

Try to isolate the problem to the preamp or power amp. Use the line/out to put a signal from a different pre-amp into the V4 power amp and see if you still have distortion. If not, your problem is in the pre-amp.
