  • volume drops, then goes. help?

Im in the process of de-chipping my crate stealth at the moment because the distortion channel was crap.
It has a similar set up to the early bassman, JCM, etc. But for some reason when i switch to distortion the sound is normal(ish) for about 4 seconds then as i play it starts to get quieter and suddenly back to normal volume on the loud impacts then drop out more and only pick up the louder stuff and keep getting quieter until only a tiny amount of sound comes through and it doesnt pick up any loud notes anymore. This is all within about 10-15 seconds. Then i ground or touch the input to the "stacked" halves of the second 12ax7 and BAM! volume's back, and then the same thing happens again. And this can cycle on and on if i wanted it to.
Anyone have any idea whats going on with that? if you want any values of plate resistors, etc just ask.

Yes, I'd wager you left a tube grid unterminated - no resistor to ground. It then slowly accumulates a charge until it pinches itself off. Then your meter - with its 10Meg resistance - completes a grid circuit for it and starts the cycle anew.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
