  • Blues Deluxe strange hum problem

    Hi all,

here's a tough one (for me, that is):

Blues Deluxe hums badly at power up (10Vpp at speaker out), then the hum slowly decreases. After 10-15 minutes only a couple 100mVpp (still too much).

1.) Tubes are new and tested good in other amps.
2.) All voltages on all tubes very close to schematic.
3.) Pulling the PI kills the hum completely. New tube: No difference.
4.) Preamp out signal is clean without hum.
5.) Otherwise, Amp works normal and puts out 40W undistorted (when the hum is gone)
6.) Putting a shorted plug into the power amp in does not change the hum.
7.) Filter caps are new (same thing with the old caps).
8.) None of the controls do any change of hum.

Any ideas where to look next?
    What am I missing?

    Thanks in advance
    Albert

Have you had a look at the heaters? Maybe one of the resistors of the artificial center tap has drifted and gets back closer to spec with heating up.
    Just my 2 cents.

Yes, I have checked that. Both 47 Ohm resistors are good, heater voltage is 3.15/0/3.15 as should be.

Also, IME one bad heater resistor would not cause such a big hum (but both bad would).

      Thanks!

      Any other ideas?

If not the heaters I'd keep my search around the PI. I suppose you have checked the solder connections and tried a third tube?
Also maybe a short on the PCB since the hum changes with time/heat?
        Moisture?

          Coca Cola.

It was behind the ribbon cable where I couldn't see it. I thought I had cleaned it all...

          Everything is fine now.
When you play Blues, drink beer, not coke.

          Cheers,

If you're going to put your drink on your amp, drink water. Otherwise, put your beer on the floor. Beer is nearly as bad as Coke AFA amp innards go. Not quite as sticky/gooey, but still...

Good to hear you got it figured out.

              j/k

Never put drinks on your amp. Or on your piano, computer, etc.
              (The amp isn't mine, btw).

              Cheers,
              Albert

Good thing we had the schematic then...

I know - I should have marked the Coca Cola on the schematic
