  • Help with a Tweed Champ first build?

I just built a Marsh Amps Tweed 51F kit. It seems fine but the overdrive is very splatty and muddy. On all kinds of pickups. Like a really bad fuzz. Does not seem right.

My voltages are all higher than listed around and on the kit layout.

    The first three caps.

    16uf - 392v (340)
    8uf - 325v (275)
    8uf - 290v (250)

The two .022 caps read around 180v (150)

I've read many posts about voltages being ok at plus 15%.
Also about getting a NOS 5Y3. I do have one in there and it has the same voltages as with the Sovtek that came with the kit.

The tone is also darker than I expected.

Any ideas? I can give more voltages if they would help.

Can you post a schem? Are the .022 caps coupling caps or are they in another part of the amp? If they're coupling caps then that voltage should only be on one side and not the other.

Basically the same as this one. Simple tweed champ.
The voltages on that layout are what are on my Marsh Amps layout.

Any chance of some pics of the chassis/pot wiring/tube socket wiring?

Voltages, whilst a little higher than the schem, are fine. It would be handy to know the voltage at pin 8 of the 6v6 too.

I'd have gone straight in at 40-50uf for the first filter cap (16uf).

"The tone is also darker than I expected." Is this in comparision with other 5F1 amps?

        Have you tried a 12AT7, or 5751 in V1? Or, a tighter rectifier (5V4/GZ34)?

cheap change is you could put a cap over the 2nd stage cathode resistor, or cap over the volume which could be switchable (push pull pot if you dont want to make visible changes).
The sound of the overdrive your getting can be fixed by smaller input caps (or so i've heard) but .022 should be adequately small.
whats the clean sound like or even the clean as it just starts to compress?
