  • Crate VC120 no power

I acquired a Crate VC120 in non working condition. I was told that the fuse kept blowing and the power transformer may be at fault.
I have heard some good things about this amp. I really would like to make my own judgment and decide to keep it or get it off my repair table.
Any ideas on where my problem is? Is my problem the tranny?

    Thanks for any info!

I have no idea if your tranny is shot, but transformers are the last thing on the list to fail. Guys who don;t know what they are talking about often decide for no reason it "must be" the transformer. of course it could be, but we won;t know that without evidence.

Leave the standby switch off. Does it blow fuses with only the power switch on? If it doesn;t blow fuses in standby, then the power transformer should be OK.

Pull the power tubes. If it no longer blows fuses, then one or more of them was bad. if it still blows fuses without them, power down and measure resistance to ground from the power tube plate pins. ANy show low resistance?

Tubes are by far the most common reason for blowing fuses. After that, check for shorted rectifier diodes, shorted filter caps. shorted flyback diodes on the output tubes, and finally shorted output transformer.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
